Mid-September, experts from around the world gathered in Cape Town, South Africa to discuss the threat of Avian Influenza (AI) to global poultry stocks. A two hour symposium, hosted by global animal health company Ceva Santé Animale, bought together experts from the United States, China, the Netherlands and France. The meeting sought to understand the continuing threat posed by AI and the value of vaccination in changing times. To date, 2015 has seen 309 individual outbreaks of Avian Influenza (AI) reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), which is a staggering 147% increase on outbreaks reported in 2014. In the US alone during the last six months, 48 million domestic poultry birds (layers and turkeys) have been culled in the United States due to AI, with the disease spreading across 15 states. [1] It has been the worst epidemic of HPAI ever in the US and despite the outbreak seemingly under control, there are fears that AI could reappear this autumn following outbreaks across 31 countries already this year. [2] Dr Mark Davidson, Associate Deputy Administrator of the National Import Export Services at the United States Department of Agriculture stated that: “We have taken tremendous effort to prepare for this fall, on the potential that there may be additional introductions (of AI) as the migratory birds come back from the north.” He continued, “We will be prepared to vaccinate if necessary.” To date the USA is yet to vaccinate any of its poultry flocks, but Dr Yannick Gardin, Director of Science and Innovation at Ceva said today that: "Many dogmas have grown up surrounding the control of Avian flu. Countries who decided to vaccinate were viewed as the bad countries, this is no longer appropriate.” AI has proven to be a major threat for the global poultry industry, disrupting international trade and inducing high levels of mortality and economical losses in infected flocks. Emerging markets especially struggle to fight and recover from the disease, and decreasing public research funds only compound the issue. Nevertheless, there is still a debate raging amongst poultry industry experts and government officials, particularly in the USA, on the necessity of AI vaccination. Professor Liu Xiufan, researcher and professor at Yangzhou University in Jiangsu, China stated that: “We learnt several lessons from the vaccination programme employed in China employed in response to the AI outbreak. Firstly, for the H5N1 HPA1, the best control strategy is to stamp out the outbreaks at the early stage. Vaccination can raise the level of flock protective immunity, increase the resistance to infection, and reduce virus replication and shredding. Secondly, vaccination must be incorporated with other methods such as biosecurity in farms, live bird markets and control of movements.” Dr Andre Steentjes, Poultry Veterinarian and member of the Poultry Veterinary Study Group of the EU concluded that the takes home messages were: “that countries need a good AI monitoring system, especially with free range birds and an early warning system – decide when you should make warnings public.” He also commented on the inconsistencies in public opinion, because often “people want the birds to be outside and don’t realise they are at risk of catching AI.” To find out more about AI and the benefits of vaccination with Vectormune ® AI, visit: http://www.avian-influenza-vaccines.com/ [1] USDA information site, http://tinyurl.com/l75hk53 [2] OIEdata, http://www.oie.int/en/animal-health-in-the-world/update-on-avian-influenza/2014/ Download the Press Release in PDF:

A paper* recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Vaccine** reports that Ceva’s new generation vaccine, Vectormune® AI, offers significant advantages over previously available vaccines against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). 23 June 2015, Libourne, France: A paper * recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Vaccine** reports that Ceva’s new generation vaccine, Vectormune ® AI, offers significant advantages over previously available vaccines against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The authors conclude that, combined with effective biosecurity measures and monitoring, Vectormune ® AI is a useful tool to control different types of HPAI of the H5 serotype in chickens. Previously, most avian influenza vaccines have been crude inactivated whole virus vaccines. These vaccines provide good protection only against virus types that are identical to those used to make the vaccine. They can also be rendered ineffective in the presence of maternally derived antibodies (MDAs), which are transferred from the vaccinated hen to the embryo and can persist in chicks for up to 4 weeks. In contrast, Ceva’s Vectormune ® AI is a vector vaccine. It is based on a well-known and safe turkey herpes virus (Marek’s HVT), which has been modified to carry the H5 type hemagglutinin antigen, the key protective factor against the avian influenza virus, which is the key protective factor. The result of the described modification is that this vaccine produces solid immunity against AI viruses of the H5 serotype. Protection of the vaccinated bird is due to induction of neutralizing antibodies directed against the hemagglutinin as well as stimulation of a cellular immune response, which is not present when classical inactivated vaccines are used. This explains the high efficacy of the vaccine as well as its broad spectrum of protection against all AI virus strains of the H5 serotype that have so far been tested. Vectormune ® AI is also effective in the presence of MDAs. It can therefore be effectively administered to day-old chicks at the hatchery. This eliminates problems associated with the variable quality of vaccine administration on the farm and provides life-long protection. Avian influenza is considered to be one of the most detrimental diseases of poultry that can also, under particular conditions, be transmitted from birds to people. Since 2003, the H5N1 strain of the disease has killed a reported 447 people while the economic impact of the disease runs into billions with hundreds of millions of birds having been culled worldwide. *** For more information see Vectormune ® AI at www.vectormune-ai.com . >> Click below to download the PDF version * Vaccine protection of chickens against antigenically diverse H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza isolates with a live HVT vector vaccine expressing the influenza hemagglutinin gene derived from a clade 2.2 avian influenza virus was written by: Darrell R.
The effectiveness of recombinant turkey herpesvirus avian influenza (A/swan/Hungary/4999/2006(H5N1)) clade 2.2 virus (rHVT-H5) vaccine was evaluated in two layer chicken breeds (White Bovans [WB] and Brown Shaver [BS]). One dose of rHVT-H5 vaccine was administered at day 1 and birds were monitored serologically(haemagglutination inhibition test) and virologically for 19 weeks. Maternally-derived antibody and post vaccination H5 antibody titres were measured using the Chinese (A/Goose/Guangdong/1/96(H5N1)) HA and the Egyptian (A/chicken/Egypt/128s/2012(H5N1)) HA as antigens. The challenge was conducted at 19 weeks of age and on six experimental groups: Groups I (WB) and II (BS), both vaccinated and challenged; Groups III (WB) and IV (BS), both vaccinated but not challenged; Groups V and VI, unvaccinated specific pathogen free chickens, serving respectively as positive and negative controls. The challenge virus was the clade 2.2.1 highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 A/chicken/Egypt/128s/2012 at a dose of 106 median embryo infective dose. For both breeds, complete maternally-derived antibody waning occurred at the age of 4 weeks. The immune response to rHVT-H5 vaccination was detected from the sixth week. The seroconversion rates for both breeds reached 85.7 to 100% in the eighth week of age. Protection levels of 73.3%, 60% and 0% were respectively recorded in Groups I, II and V. No mortalities occurred in the unchallenged groups. Group I showed superior results for all measured post-challenge parameters. In conclusion, a single rHVT-H5 hatchery vaccination conferred a high level of protection for a relatively extended period. This vaccine could be an important tool for future A/H5N1 prevention/ control in endemic countries. Further studies on persistence of immunity beyond 19 weeks, need for booster with inactivated vaccines, breed susceptibility and vaccinal response, and transmissibility are recommended.
